So my girlfriend just sent me a link for this 71 BMW 2800 coupe. A few months ago she signed Corona as a client and they gave her a substantial monthly income boost. As such she has saved up and wants to get a classic car that she can park at my place and restore for the summer. She comes from a family with a bunch of old Mercs but seems to be pretty set on bmws of this vintage.
I think it would be a fun activity to do together but I don't want a basket-case that would cause too much stress for the two of us. I know these old bmws have touchy carbs (I'd just swap in some webers) and parts are hard to find but this one looks to be fairly clean and complete. I don't know any classic BMW mechanics in the Denver area but with a good tune-up and blessing from a professional set of eyes I think we could make a move on this one. Clearly I am looking for armchair point and shoot judgment here so... is 6k a fair price for this or is this 'dealer' trying to get a quick buck?

Just understand and accept the money you put into it you will not get out of it. If you want to do this - you need to keep the car for a long time.
If you want a fixer-upper, I don't think you should be paying retail prices. $6000 seems high to me but I am not a beemer guy. Rust and body work can get expensive, engine won't be what you need to worry about. You might as well get it pulled and rebuilt - not too expensive on BMW's. I think you should shop the entire US including auctions. Find BMW specialists - even out of state and let them know what you are looking for. They may have a client looking to sell one.

I think it's a decent deal depending how recent those records and receipts are.
I must add, your girlfriend sounds awesome. Good for you man.

That's a good point, might be better to find her well sorted one and spend the time driving it instead of cursing underneath it.

Thank you I agree haha. I think the fanaticism has rubbed off on her a bit and she wants something like my old 510. We're going to check it out this weekend and I will report back, hopefully the snow doesn't fly just yet.

If there is absolutely NO rust at all, he has all of the receipts for everything that has been done/maintained/repaired on the car, and hasn't been in an accident, I can see 6k. However, that is what I would pay if it was ready to drive daily right now. Usually what I will do, when someone is asking a somewhat fair price, I will find out everything that is wrong with it, tally it up with how much (exact prices, rockauto/pelicanparts is your friend) parts would be (and labor, if some things are out of your realm like an alignment), and subtract that from the seller's asking price.
And if this one doesn't work out, there is always a glorious E30 out there needing to be rescued.

That isn't a bad price, but with the snow on the ground you've got to ask..how old are those pics? Or is it already snowing in CO? Anyway, be very wary of rust, but a quick search and I found 3 examples that I posted last year that put that car in the right ballpark pricewise. Data is your friend.

Yep we're getting snow here now - had a snowstorm right around the time he posted this ad so I think they are recent pictures. I assume these have the same rear strut rust problems the 2002s have? Thanks for linking to those similar models, she likes the 2500s and bavarias too so I will have to cross shop those too.
Great site and thanks for the info!

She doesn't like the E30s and I can't convince her otherwise... Maybe I'll have to have her drive one (with a stick) haha. I'm going to be all over this car looking for rust and if it doesn't look good we have no problem walking away.
I like to emulate Mike Brewer of WD when looking over a car, good to spot everything the car will need when starting negotiations. Anyways I can't figure this girl out, she is looking at old minis now!

Haha, looks like she wants a good ol classic car.
But no E30?!!? If you can find an M3 version, have her drive one of those, if she doesn't love it, then there is no hope. But since you said she is looking at other imports, and she wants a fixer upper, why not check out some older Porsche's and Audi's as well, they are a pain but in all honesty pretty fun to work on. (I'm resto-modding a 944, it's a pain but satisfying)

No problem! I always tell people on a low-dollar classic like these to get the nicest example you can find because the cost to restore will never be recouped when you sell...this doesn't apply to a rare exotic or a car that appreciates while you restore it, but with a run of the mill classic, unless you enjoy restoration, keep to good running/driving/paint examples and save you cash/time for something else.

I love 80s styling but she does not. I think she has her heart set on something from the early 70s. Its nigh impossible to find an Audi of this vintage. If we can find an older 230sl or 911 that would be something I would have to share with her but those can get pricey. Im pushing for a 240Z or celica because J-Tin but she has her heart set on Euros. Ultimately this is her cash and her decision I am merely here for guidance.

Absolutely. She wants to learn but maybe we should start with basic maintenance and see if she takes to it. It's also gotta be something she can drive frequently and guilt free so a good looking, rust free runner with interior needs would be nice.

Yeah true, and I know what you mean. But yeah when it comes to Porsche's that old, it's either working well and pricey, or a complete junker from what I've seen, what about an older VW?

Looks like a rust spot in front of door. Not a good spot as it is probably on the chassis as well.

I think I see what you are talking about, bottom of the fender right there? If that is a rust hot spot, and it is that bad, there is probably rust rampant through that thing
